What are the early signs?
They are usually small and practical. Noticing them early means you can put gentle support in place before something goes wrong.
- Trouble with showering, dressing or moving about safely
- Missed medications or confusion about them
- Weight loss, skipped meals or an empty fridge
- More falls, near-misses or unsteadiness
- A once-tidy home becoming hard to manage
- Growing isolation or low mood
What if they say they are fine?
That is very common, and understandable. Framing help as something that keeps them independent at home, rather than something they have failed at, often makes the conversation easier.
What is a good first step?
Start small. A couple of hours a week on shower days, or help with meals, can make a big difference and build trust. You can always add more later.
